The U.S. Census Bureau has published updated population estimates and projections extending to the year 2100 for 21 countries and areas through its International Database (IDB). The latest release refines demographic data for nations including Australia, Bangladesh, Nigeria, the United States, and others. This update also provides information for over 13,600 subnational regions worldwide—comparable to states or counties in the U.S.—and introduces improved mapping features.
According to the Census Bureau, “New data and analyses were used to refine population estimates and projections for Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, El Salvador, Eswatini, Guatemala, Iran, Jamaica, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, Togo, Tunisia, the United States and Zambia.”
The updated IDB incorporates new information from censuses as well as surveys and administrative records. It now offers revised analyses based on these sources. The database includes demographic indicators such as total population by sex and single years of age up to 100-plus years old. It also tracks factors like mortality rates, fertility rates and net international migration across more than 220 countries and territories.
The Census Bureau regularly updates the IDB as new data become available. Users can access these estimates and projections on the International Database Overview webpage: https://www.census.gov/data-tools/demo/idb/region.php.
