The U.S. Census Bureau has published new statistics detailing state-level geographic mobility and place of birth for 2024. The data comes from the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates.

The release includes two main tables. The first, State-to-State Migration Flows, provides estimates on how many people moved between all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and from abroad to the United States. The second table, State of Residence by Place of Birth, offers information about where people currently live in relation to their place of birth across these same regions.

Geographic mobility is defined as the movement of people within and across boundaries. These updated statistics allow policymakers, researchers, and the public to better understand migration patterns throughout the country.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau: “The State-to-State Migration Flows table package contains: State-to-State Migration Flows. This table provides estimates of the number of people moving between the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and to the United States from abroad. State of Residence by Place of Birth. This table provides estimates of people currently living in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico by place of birth.”

No separate news release was issued with this data; it was provided as a tip sheet only.
