The U.S. Census Bureau released new Business Formation Statistics for March 2026, according to an April 8 announcement. The data provide monthly updates on new business applications and formations across the United States and Puerto Rico.
The Business Formation Statistics are designed to give timely insights into economic activity by tracking trends in business creation. This information is important for policymakers, economists, and researchers who monitor economic growth and entrepreneurship.
According to the Census Bureau, the full dataset includes twelve series—four related to applications and eight related to formations—which are published each month with national, regional, and state-level breakdowns. For Puerto Rico, four monthly business application series are included as part of the standard release. The statistics feature both seasonally adjusted and non-seasonally adjusted data.
The Business Formation Statistics were developed through research collaboration between the Census Bureau and economists from several institutions: the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame.
