The U.S. Census Bureau has released preliminary data from the 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances, offering an early overview of public school spending for pre-K through 12th grade. The initial figures also include state-level summaries on revenues and expenditures for school systems during the 2024 fiscal year.

According to the Census Bureau, fiscal years are not standardized across all school systems, which means that reporting periods may differ between districts. The survey data have not been adjusted to create a uniform fiscal year across all entities.

These preliminary findings are subject to revision before the final data release. The Census Bureau expects to publish the complete set of results for all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2026.
