Flu activity remains high across the United States as the new year begins, with an increase in hospitalizations. In Georgia, flu rates are higher this season compared to last year.
Dr. Parissa Rabbinafard of Peachtree Dunwoody Medical Associates shared recommendations for those living with someone who has contracted the flu. “I recommend limiting close contact – hugging, sharing food, sitting close – and trying to stay in separate rooms if possible,” said Dr. Rabbinafard.
She also advised wearing a mask when sharing space with an ill person to reduce the risk of transmission. “Household members should wash hands frequently and avoid touching your face,” she said. “Clean and disinfect daily, focusing on high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, phones, remotes, countertops and bathroom fixtures.”
For those exposed to the flu, Dr. Rabbinafard suggested contacting a primary care provider about whether preventive antiviral medication like Tamiflu is appropriate.
The Georgia Department of Public Health reported six flu-related deaths in the week ending January 3 and a total of 46 deaths during this flu season. The Atlanta area saw 416 hospitalizations for flu in the past week alone, bringing the total since early October to more than 2,100.
