Mississippi reported 64,000 job openings in June 2025, down from 68,000 in May, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job openings rate for the state was 5.1 percent in June compared to 5.4 percent in May. Nationally, the job openings rate stood at 4.4 percent in June and 4.6 percent in May.

Regional Commissioner Victoria G. Lee stated, “The job openings rate in Mississippi was 5.1 percent in June and 5.4 percent in the previous month.”

The ratio of unemployed persons per job opening in Mississippi was 0.8 for June, which is below the national measure of 0.9 unemployed persons per job opening. Across the country, 25 states and the District of Columbia had ratios lower than the national figure; 18 states had higher ratios, and seven matched the national average.

In terms of hiring activity, Mississippi saw 41,000 hires and 40,000 separations during June, compared to May’s figures of 42,000 hires and 39,000 separations. Over the past year ending in June, monthly averages were recorded at 44,000 hires and 43,000 separations.

Within separations for June, there were 27,000 quits and 11,000 layoffs or discharges reported—slightly up from May’s numbers of 26,000 quits and 10,000 layoffs or discharges. For the past year on average each month there have been about 28,000 quits (ranging between 24,000 and 32,000) and approximately 13,000 layoffs or discharges (ranging between 10,000 and 18,000).

The next release of State Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey estimates for July is scheduled for September 17 at 10:00 a.m., Eastern Time.

This report uses statistics from the Bureau’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), which provides insights into labor demand and workforce movement using model-based estimates that incorporate JOLTS sample data along with information from other sources such as Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) and Current Employment Statistics (CES). The number of unemployed persons per job opening is calculated using unemployment estimates from both national surveys like the Current Population Survey (CPS) as well as state-level models provided by Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS).

Definitions clarify that job openings refer to positions open on the last business day of each reference month; hires count all payroll additions within that month; separations tally all departures—including quits and layoffs—within that same period.

Further technical details about these definitions are available through official documentation provided by BLS.
