Kaiser Permanente has acquired approximately 7 acres of land in Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood for $31.5 million, signaling a possible expansion of health care services near Downtown Atlanta. The California-based health care provider described the purchase as a “first step” toward a project intended to improve access to care, but has not provided specific details or a timeline for development.

The acquisition was first reported by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The purchased property is located at 41 Fulton Street and was previously used as a parking lot for Braves games and Georgia State University football events at Center Parc Stadium. The seller, Animal, an Atlanta real estate firm, retains an adjacent 3-acre parcel for its own future development.

This move comes amid ongoing concerns about medical service capacity in the area. Since Wellstar closed Atlanta Medical Center in 2022, Grady Memorial Hospital has absorbed more trauma cases, increasing pressure on the city’s safety net system. The former AMC campus has been demolished and could be redeveloped for mixed use.

Mayor Andre Dickens recently suggested allocating $115 million from the Beltline’s tax district toward a new health care project and called on local and state officials to improve medical access. In another recent transaction, Atrium Health paid nearly $70 million for a 40-acre site near the West End MARTA station, which is widely believed to be intended for a future hospital.

Kaiser stated it will undertake a “deliberate planning process” with community involvement before finalizing plans for the site. Kaiser already serves around 426,000 members in metro Atlanta and Athens.
