IAM Union Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez recently visited Hawaii to meet with members of IAM Local 1998. The visit underscored the important role played by Local 1998 within the union’s Western Territory and its impact on national security and defense.

Local 1998, established in 1951, has represented workers in Hawaii for more than seventy years. The local is considered a key part of the IAM’s presence in the region, contributing to both stability and growth over several decades.

“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” remarked GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”

Martinez highlighted that Hawaii’s geographic location gives Local 1998 particular significance, both economically and nationally. Members of the local are involved in industries vital to infrastructure and defense, making their contributions essential to operational readiness and mission success. He acknowledged the weight of responsibility carried by these workers and emphasized that their union representation should remain strong and responsive.

Martinez reaffirmed IAM’s commitment to protecting members’ rights, securing fair contracts, and ensuring safe working conditions so they can continue performing their work with confidence.

He also noted that Local 1998 reflects Hawaii’s diverse cultural makeup, bringing together people from different backgrounds who share a commitment to solidarity. According to Martinez, this diversity strengthens not only Local 1998 but also the entire Western Territory.

During his visit, Martinez met with local leadership and members to discuss priorities and listen to concerns. His trip was intended to demonstrate the International’s ongoing dedication to staying connected with locals throughout the territory, regardless of distance.
