The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners is proposing to keep the general fund millage rate unchanged at 6.950 mills for 2025, the same as last year. The proposal will be discussed in three public hearings scheduled for August 12 and August 19 at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville.

Under Georgia law, when the total digest of taxable property is prepared, a rollback millage rate must be calculated to ensure that reassessments do not automatically increase tax revenue. For 2025, this rollback rate for Gwinnett County is 6.607 mills. The proposed rate of 6.950 mills is 0.343 mills higher than the rollback rate, which means state law requires an official announcement of a property tax increase. Notices regarding this process will be published in the Gwinnett Daily Post starting August 3.

The Board adopted its 2025 budget based on maintaining the current millage rate rather than using the lower rollback figure. Revenue from property taxes supports essential county services and needs approved by commissioners.

“Just like our residents, Gwinnett County Government is facing increasing costs of basic materials essential for County operations,” said Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “Through these challenges, we remain committed to being good stewards of the tax dollars that fund our operations. Our proposal to hold the millage rate steady for another year would enable us to continue delivering the high-quality government services residents expect and deserve.”

Commissioners are also reviewing millage rates for other funds, including police, fire and emergency services, development and code enforcement, recreation, and economic development.

Residents can submit comments online about the proposed millage rate until August 18 at 9 p.m., by visiting GwinnettCounty.com. The final decision on millage rates will take place during the regular Board meeting on August 19 at 2 p.m.

Enrollment in Gwinnett County schools increased by less than 0.1% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year (https://www.gadoe.org/). The district enrolled a total of 190,044 students during that period (https://www.gadoe.org/). White students represented about 18% of the student body in county schools for that academic year (https://www.gadoe.org/).
