Two researchers from Georgia State University’s Institute for Biomedical Sciences have been named among the most highly cited scientists in the world, according to Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2025 list.

The annual list recognizes global research scientists and social scientists who have shown significant influence in their fields. The selection process highlights those who demonstrate excellence and integrity in their research, publication, and citation practices. According to Clarivate, “Each researcher selected for the Highly Cited Researchers list has authored a minimum number of highly cited papers, research documents that rank in the top 1 percent by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science Core Collection over the past 11 years, and has a minimum number of citations. This list, based on citation data, is refined using other quantitative metrics, qualitative analysis and expert judgment.”

Andrew Gewirtz, Regents’ Professor at Georgia State University’s Institute for Biomedical Sciences, was recognized in the cross-field category for 2025. He was also included on this list from 2022 through 2024. The cross-field category includes researchers with highly cited work across several different scientific disciplines.

Lanying Du, Distinguished University Professor at the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, is also listed among Highly Cited Researchers in 2025 for cross-field impact. From 2021 to 2024 she was recognized either in cross-field or microbiology categories. Additionally, Du has been listed among Stanford University’s ranking of the world’s top two percent most-cited scientists from 2021 to 2025.

Clarivate reports that “Highly Cited Researchers are 1 in 1,000 of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists. The 2025 list contains 7,131 Highly Cited Researcher awards in 21 science and social science fields, presented to 6,868 individuals from 60 countries and regions who conducted research at universities, government agencies and other research institutes.” Some honorees are recognized across more than one Essential Science Indicators field.

According to Clarivate: “The rigorous evaluation and selection process for the Highly Cited Researchers list draws on data from the Web of Science Core Collection and then uses quantitative metrics and qualitative analysis to identify individuals whose work has had a genuine global influence on their fields.”
