Georgia Power and the Atlanta Falcons have launched a new backup power resiliency system at the Falcons’ Flowery Branch campus. The project uses advanced Distributed Energy Resource (DER) technology provided by PowerSecure, aiming to improve energy reliability for the team’s training facilities and the nearby Emory Orthopaedic Center.
This initiative marks the first time a DER has been enrolled in Georgia Power’s DER Customer Owned (DCO) program, and it is also the first of its kind within Georgia Power’s Resiliency Programs. The system is designed to not only support operations at Flowery Branch but also contribute to Georgia Power’s broader goals of improving grid reliability and flexibility for the community.
“This project reflects our commitment to preparedness, innovation, and being a responsible community partner,” said Spencer Treadwell, senior vice president, operations and special projects for the Atlanta Falcons. “By working with Georgia Power to maximize the value of our campus resiliency solution at Flowery Branch, we are protecting our operations and neighboring medical facilities while also helping advance solutions that strengthen the electric grid for customers across our community.”
Latanza Adjei, senior vice president of customer experience at Georgia Power, stated: “We appreciate the Atlanta Falcons’ leadership and partnership on this project. Load flexibility and dispatchable DER help Georgia Power provide reliable, affordable power for all customers, and projects like this show how customer-sited resiliency solutions can strengthen the entire grid.”
Georgia Power has maintained a longstanding relationship with both the Atlanta Falcons and AMB Sports and Entertainment through various initiatives focused on operational excellence, sustainability, and community impact. The latest collaboration highlights how innovative energy solutions can offer benefits not just to individual customers but also to local communities and the wider electric system.
