Dr. Marcus Plescia has been named the new district health director for Fulton County, according to an announcement from the Georgia Department of Public Health. His appointment will begin on November 3, 2025.
Dr. Plescia holds a Medical Degree, Master of Public Health, and Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his Family Medicine training at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, and is Board-Certified in Family Medicine. Over his 20-year career, Dr. Plescia has worked in a variety of settings, including those serving homeless, urban-poor, and rural underserved populations.
He most recently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Director of the Office of Science and Medicine at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to that, he was Chief Medical Officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), where he provided support to state public health leaders nationwide.
Dr. Kathleen Toomey, Commissioner at the Georgia Department of Public Health, stated, “We are pleased to welcome Dr. Marcus Plescia as the new district health director for Fulton County. His outstanding track record of managing public health programs at the local, state, and federal levels, along with his medical qualifications, make him the ideal candidate to lead the Fulton County Board of Health.”
Dr. R. Chris Rustin will serve as interim district health director through December 2025 to assist Dr. Plescia during his transition.
