President Donald Trump has announced the launch of the Genesis Mission, a national initiative led by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aimed at transforming American science and innovation through artificial intelligence (AI). The mission is designed to enhance the nation’s technological leadership and competitiveness on a global scale.

According to the Department of Energy, the Genesis Mission will use advancements in AI and computing to double productivity and impact in American science and engineering over the next decade. The effort aims for breakthroughs in energy security, scientific discovery, and national defense.

“Throughout history, from the Manhattan Project to the Apollo mission, our nation’s brightest minds and industries have answered the call when their nation needed them,” said Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. “Today, the United States is calling on them once again. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Genesis Mission will unleash the full power of our National Laboratories, supercomputers, and data resources to ensure that America is the global leader in artificial intelligence and to usher in a new golden era of American discovery.”

The initiative builds upon previous executive actions by President Trump focused on reducing barriers to AI development and strengthening domestic innovation capacity. Earlier this year, an AI Action Plan was released as part of efforts to reduce reliance on foreign technology sources.

Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil has been appointed by Secretary Wright to direct the mission. The Genesis Mission will coordinate activities across DOE’s 17 National Laboratories as well as partnerships with industry and academia. The goal is to create an integrated platform connecting advanced supercomputers, AI systems, quantum technologies, and scientific instruments—forming what officials describe as “the world’s most complex and powerful scientific instrument ever built.” This network will involve about 40,000 DOE personnel working alongside private sector partners.

The Genesis Mission targets three main areas:

– Accelerating advanced nuclear technologies, fusion research, and grid modernization using AI for affordable and secure energy.
– Building a quantum ecosystem through public-private investment to drive future discoveries.
– Developing advanced AI tools for national security applications such as maintaining nuclear stockpile safety and advancing defense materials.

Dr. Darío Gil stated: “The Genesis Mission marks a defining moment for the next era of American science. We are linking the nation’s most advanced facilities, data, and computing into one closed-loop system to create a scientific instrument for the ages, an engine for discovery that doubles R&D productivity and solves challenges once thought impossible.”

Brandon Williams, Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), commented: “The Genesis Mission represents the next great chapter and an unparalleled opportunity for America’s scientific and national security leadership. Building on decades of innovation and collaboration across our national laboratories, NNSA will leverage AI, quantum computing, and advanced data analytics that will strengthen our deterrents and ensure the United States maintains an unmatched strategic edge over our adversaries. Under President Trump’s leadership, this mission will embody the very best of American ingenuity, turning science and innovation into security.”

Dr. John Wagner, Chair of the National Laboratory Directors’ Council added: “DOE’s National Laboratories are engines of discovery that keep the United States competitive and secure. The Genesis Mission unlocks the full potential of these institutions by giving our scientists and engineers tools to work at the speed of innovation. Our laboratories have always risen to meet the nation’s greatest challenges, and this initiative ensures we continue that legacy in the age of artificial intelligence.”
