The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced investments exceeding $320 million to boost artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities under the Genesis Mission. This funding is aligned with President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut and DOE appropriations focused on advancing “AI for science” initiatives.

According to DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil, “Thanks to President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut, the Department of Energy is proud to advance AI investments to ensure American technological leadership and accelerate scientific discovery. By investing in the American Science Cloud and the Transformational AI Model Consortium we are creating the foundational technologies and AI-ready data sets that will enable the success of the Genesis Mission.”

The investment will support four main initiatives:

– The American Science Cloud (AmSC) will serve as a key infrastructure component, hosting and distributing AI models and scientific data for use by national laboratories, industry, and research partners.
– The Transformational AI Models Consortium (ModCon) will focus on developing self-improving AI models using DOE’s data, facilities, and expertise. Teams involved aim to create core capabilities needed across scientific fields.
– Fourteen projects in robotics and automation will introduce intelligent systems into laboratory environments through advanced automation and robotics.
– Thirty-seven foundational AI awards are intended to curate large datasets and develop robust, validated AI models for scientific applications. These efforts aim to help AI systems analyze extensive datasets from experiments, simulations, or observational studies.

More information about these projects can be found on the Genesis Mission website.
