Dr. LaTonya Harris, assistant professor of special education, earned the National Certified Transition Specialist (NCTS) credential, according to a March 19 announcement. The credential is offered by the Division for Career Development and Transition Council for Exceptional Children.
The NCTS credential recognizes professionals who demonstrate expertise in supporting students with disabilities as they prepare for life after school. This certification aims to improve educational outcomes and career readiness for these students.
Harris is among the first group of nine leaders in career development and transition for students with disabilities to receive this new credential. The announcement was made at the CEC 2026 Convention and Expo held in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The introduction of the NCTS credential marks a step forward in professional standards within special education, providing educators with recognition for specialized skills in transition planning.
As more professionals pursue this certification, observers expect it will contribute to better support systems and opportunities for students with disabilities transitioning from school to adult life.
