The U.S. Census Bureau will hold a prerelease webinar on January 22 at 1 p.m. ET to discuss the upcoming release of the 2020-2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates. The session aims to guide users on how to access ACS data and provide advice for comparing statistics across different geographic areas and over time.

The ACS collects data on various aspects of life in the United States, including language spoken at home, education levels, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. For many of these topics, the ACS is the only source offering local-level estimates.

Statistics from the new ACS estimates will be available under embargo to registered subscribers starting January 27 at 10 a.m. ET. These data cover a wide range of geographic areas such as all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional and state legislative districts, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, counties, places, census tracts, and block groups.

Subscribers with embargo access can review the information until January 29 at 12:01 a.m. ET. During this period, distribution services are not allowed to release any news stories or data files before the public release date. All datasets will become publicly available by January 29 at 10 a.m. ET.

Information about embargo registration can be found at www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.

Gretchen Gooding, chief of the American Community Survey Office Outreach and Education Branch; Vicki Mack, statistician with the American Community Survey Office; and Jewel Jordan from the Public Information Office will lead the webinar. The event will feature an audio conference alongside an online presentation. Attendees do not need to call in separately for audio access. Both credentialed media members and data users may ask questions during or after the presentation using provided features.

Registration for the webinar is available at www.census.gov/data/academy/webinars/2026/2020-2024-acs-5-year-prerelease.html.
